Math club this afternoon! Thursdays are my favourite days! I wish we could have math club _every_ day!!! I suppose, math classes are math club to some extent, but still.
What we’re learning these days is really neat. It’s like we’ve gone back to being five years old, and we’re just learning to count again, and building everything else up from there. It’s so _simple_ but really deep at the same time. It seems so trivial*, and yet the conclusions have such powerful implications. It’s taken so long to get to where we are today. And to think that it all started with people learning to count past three…
On infinity and the mind:
After Prof Dimitrov’s lecture at math club a little while ago, a friend of mine had some questions, so he talked to Prof Roth. After a little while Prof Roth stopped my friend and said that that was enough discussion about the subject for the day - too much discussion about such things could cause insanity.
* although as illustrated many times by Prof Dimitrov in math club, it seems that almost everything is trivial given enough knowledge and the right point of view.
