Web stuff

March 21st, 2005 by Adina

I’m having much fun learning about php and web design in general. For Mech 212 we have to work in groups of four with a client to complete some kind of design project. Ours is analysing the efficiency of the enthalpy wheel installed in the new engineering building. The most fun part of this project is that I decided to make a “company” website and to set up a wiki to help us collaborate on the project and share information. It was so much fun!

I used mediawiki (the wiki that wikipedia works on). It was way easier to set up than I thought it would be. I guess the setup is easy, but once your wiki gets huge (which ours won’t) you start having to deal with more difficult stuff and you have to tweak the software and hardware. I’m so proud that I was able to set it up myself!

Since it was so easy to set up, I’m considering setting one up for schoolwork. I think a school wiki could be awesome! If enough people were interested in it I think it would be incredibly useful.

I need to convince some engsoc web people to help me with this. It could be super cool.

I`ve just started learning about web design and it is fun-tastic times. I like your idea on setting up a schoolwork web site. I was wondering if you`ve done it already since some time has gone by:)

Well, some friends and I tried, but it never got off the ground. It just takes critical mass and effort, and we ended up needing to spend the time and effort on the schoolwork itself instead of working on the wiki. Too bad. I think that wikibooks might be a good venue for such things without having to worry so much about critical mass.
