When I woke up this morning, the sun was shining in our window. We haven’t seen it too much the past few days, what with the driving rain and wind we’ve been having. I decided to take the chance and bike to school since I hadn’t for far too long. I got dressed up in what I thought would be warm enough but even though there was no wind, by the time I got to class my fingers were tingly and my face was numb.
After my morning classes, I spent a good part of the afternoon finishing a physics assignment in Jeffrey. I got the computers to boot of the Ubuntu livecd, which I hadn’t been able to do before for some unknown reason. I also figured out how to get gaim to work through the webproxy. Simple accomplishments, but I was proud. It was all very homey. After a couple of hours, I managed to finish the assignment to my satisfaction, so I packed up and headed outside to McLaughlin Hall to hand it in.
As I climbed up the last flight of stairs, I looked outside and saw fluffy white flakes of snow falling from the sky! They weren’t just melting on impact either. Beautiful.
By the time my last class was over, it was dark. I bundled up again and hopped on my bike for the ride home. Despite the snowflakes getting in my eyes, it was a peaceful ride - a perfect ending to the week. Although it does bother me that so much energy is wasted on it, I couldn’t help but smile and feel warm and fuzzy as I rode past the big house with the red and white lights out in full force.
Later that night I made up a huge batch of bread - five loaves worth which was twice as much as I meant to make. With the smell of rising bread filling the apartment, Trevyn and I headed outside for a walk and a bit of tobogganing. At the hill close to our house (which is pretty decent, although not very big) there was a group of half a dozen people who seemed like international students. We offered to share our crazy carpets, and a couple of them took us up on it. I showed the first guy how, and off he went, down the hill! The second guy seemed a bit more cautious - he didn’t seem to like my method of barrelling down the hill face first. So, he sat on the carpet and I gave him a push.
Already this winter is turning out better than last. I didn’t go sledding even once last year, and even though this is the first snow, I’ve already been out!
Now, less than an hour after coming back into the apartment, caked with snow and beaming, I’m sitting at this desk, hair wet from a shower, and eating a still warm piece of fresh bread with butter and honey.
