My three days in Bremen were very nice despite the head cold which came down on me like a ton of bricks on my second night. (Don’t worry, I managed to explain to the pharmacist what I needed, so I’m now suitably hopped up on Sudafed and Asprin.) The old part of the city is almost entirely car free, so many people bike to work through the narrow cobblestone streets. I managed to buy a battery charger, so I got some photos on the second and third day, most of which are up on my picasa gallery.
My ability to talk to people in Germany surprisingly (to me at least) increased markedly in just the three days I was in Bremen. On day one, I was mostly too nervous I guess, so most of the conversations degenerated either into English, or hand waving. By the third day, most of my conversations were in German, albeit German with many awkward, I-don’t-understand looks, but still.
One very cool thing about Bremen is the ice cream stands. There’s practically one on every corner selling cones for .60 or .70 euros. Of course, they aren’t huge cones like you get in Canada - they’re probably a bit smaller than you’d expect a kid’s cone to be - but that’s great. If you really want to eat too much a la North America, you can always pay for more scoops, or just buy more than one cone a day…
The Bremer Backpacker Hostel was a great place to stay. It was fairly quiet, which was helpful, since I wanted to get over my jet lag as much as possible. My single room was clean and bright, though it would have been nice to have non see through curtains. I wish my kitchen was as nice as theirs! They have a computer that one can use for €1/ half hour. Unfortunately, it was a bit flaky since the ethernet cable had broken connectors, but it worked every time I used it. The staff were really nice, and very helpful. They were really good with speaking slowly in German or in English when I didn’t understand.
Bremen was definitely a nice place to stay. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to visit again!
