Country stars

October 9th, 2007 by Adina

At 9pm on Saturday night I decided to head back to the ferienwohnung to do some reading before bed. Heading up the stairs, I happened to glance at the sky and saw the stars. Not the handful that shine through the glare of city lights, but the stars you can only see in the country. The sky was teeming with glittering pinpricks of light. I wandered out into the field to get a better look.

I stood in the darkness for a long time, gazing at the sky, taking in the milky way which I hadn’t seen in far too long. I saw a handful of planes and a few sattelites skim by. I even saw a faint shooting star. After a little while I heard rustling next to me. I couldn’t make out what it was in the twighlight, so I turned on my flashlight. 2m away from me was a hedgehog, eating its breakfast. It was curled up in a ball - disconcerted by the abrupt appearance of a large animal with a bright light - so I quickly turned the light off and went back to watching the sky.

The stars filled the west, north, and east of the sky, but the southern stars were hidden by haze and the orange glow of a nearby farm house. As the haze grew I realised that it was a thick fog slowly making its way towards me. I watched it swallow up a copse of trees to the east. Slowly the stars became dimmer, and my nose got colder. Eventually the entire field was shrouded in fog, and I got cold enough to go inside.
