German Word of the Day - Fahrrad

Fahrrad is one of my favourite words in German. Not only is it the word for one of my favourite things - bicycle - but it shows how important this vehicle is (or at least was) to the German people.

Fahr comes from fahren - to drive or ride. “Ich fahre mit dem bus.” - I go by bus. “Ich fahre mit dem Auto.” - I drive my car.

Rad means wheel. “Mein Fahrrad hat zwei Räder.” - My bicycle has two wheels.

Every wheeled vehicle that people ride should be a bicycle…
